The step up from a competent firefighter is around £2,441 to the development rate — smaller than most people expect for a promotion, and worth weighing against the change in responsibility. Crew managers remain eligible for Pre-Arranged Overtime, so total earnings depend partly on how much additional duty is available.
Both crew manager pay points sit in the 12.9% FPS 2015 contribution band, which covers pensionable pay from £27,001 to £60,000. Because the bands are applied to the whole of pensionable pay rather than marginally, promotion within this range does not change the contribution rate.
