Firefighters in Scotland work for a single national service — the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), the UK's largest fire service by area. Pay is set under the SJC (Scottish Joint Council) framework rather than the England & Wales NJC — but the two move together: SJC settlements broadly mirror the NJC Grey Book rates and structure (Development → Competent progression, equivalent role map). SFRS uses Commander titles — Crew Commander, Watch Commander, Station Commander, Group Commander, Area Commander — for the roles the Grey Book calls Managers.
The bigger difference for your payslip is tax: SFRS pay is taxed at Scottish income tax bands (19% Starter, 20% Basic, 21% Intermediate, 42% Higher, 45% Advanced, 48% Top), not the England & Wales bands. Around the Competent Firefighter level the difference is small (roughly £1–2/week); at Watch Commander and above, the 42% Higher band starting at £43,662 (vs £50,270 in England) takes a visibly larger slice.
Pension: Scottish firefighters are in the Scottish Firefighters' Pension Schemes, administered by the SPPA — the 2015 CARE design mirrors the England & Wales FPS 2015 with its own regulations. On-call (RDS) arrangements operate across much of rural Scotland with the same retainer structure (percentage of wholetime basic).
